Basílica dos Mártires

The origin of this church goes back to 1147, when the first king of Portugal had a temple built and dedicated to Our Lady of the Martyrs, paying homage to the men fallen during the reconquest of Lisbon. In the 18th century the church had been redecorated in Baroque style and after the big earthquake of Lisbon in 1755 it was rebuilt, becoming one of the finest examples of the reconstructed churches in Downtown.
The centre of the painted ceiling, by Pedro Alexandrino, depicts the Apotheosis of King Afonso Henriques surrounded by martyrs and angels.
